Airtightness on refurbishment projects is particularly challenging, as uneven subsurfaces and walls that are not straight are commonly encountered. These are often covered over with a lightweight wall made of plasterboard to create a clean, even new surface in refurbishment situations. However, non-sealed elements such as unplastered masonry in the building envelope are generally not taken care of first.
Air flow is possible behind structures of this type, and these structures need to be improved. The rule of thumb here is: applying coatings is better than fitting cladding over these surfaces. It is sufficient to apply a smooth plaster finish to unplastered or porous masonry areas in order to prevent the flow of air. Alternatively, a sprayable plastic sealant can be applied to the surface. To achieve more reliable results, blower door testing during construction can identify weaknesses in this regard at an early stage.
This series of articles summarises typical, challenging joint situations and shows how technicians can find practical solutions for these challenges. It also provides an overview of the detail features for which prefabricated solutions are available that allow tradespeople to achieve airtightness in a quick, easy and reliable manner.
The INTELLO and AEROSANA VISCONN airtightness systems are Passive House certified
Particularly energy-efficient, permanent adhesion and reliable performance – these are the requirements that pro clima demands of its construction materials. After all, good buildings that provide healthy indoor environments can only be achieved if the quality level of the construction components is right. pro clima has this quality level checked at regular intervals by independent external bodies.
New: the AEROSANA VISCONN sprayable sealant is Passive House certified
The Passive House Institute has now confirmed that the new humidity-variable AEROSANA VISCONN airtightness sealant also fulfils its strict criteria and achieves the highest efficiency class of phA. This spray-on or brush-on airtightness sealant is proving very popular among installation technicians as its saves time and can be used flexibly. Thanks to its humidity-variable sd value, it can be used both indoors and outdoors. It can cover cracks and joints of up to 3 mm in width. If the system fleece is also used, then larger joints can also be dealt with. Once it has dried, AEROSANA VISCONN is permanently elastic and very resilient. It can also be plastered over without any problems.
Planners and architects are including the new AEROSANA VISCONN in their construction projects because they know that spraying or painting on provides reliable sealing for challenging detailed features. In addition, the humidity-variable diffusion resistance also provides better protection for building components. Installation technicians appreciate the ease of installation and the time savings compared to working with adhesive tapes. In this way, a seamless, sealed airtightness layer can be achieved for walls, ceilings and floors in a time-saving manner.
With INTELLO, winter building sites are not a problem
With a hydrosafe value of over 2 m, INTELLO protects insulation structures reliably – even if there is a lot of building moisture present due to plastering and the installation of screed, for example. In addition, pro clima INTELLO is the first humidity-variable vapour retarder with European technical approval. There are a number of humidity-variable vapour retarders – Michael Förster (the head of Application Technology at pro clima) explains the differences between them in this video:
Awkward detail features that are difficult to access, penetrations and transitions between components with lots of corners and edges are frequently encountered on building sites. With these challenges, creating airtightness seals can be a time-consuming task.
Airtightness sealing with the AEROSANA VISCONN system – a real all-rounder: whether you are sealing a large surface area or a complicated joint detail – AEROSANA VISCONN ensures permanent airtightness everywhere!
The sprayable AEROSANA VISCONN airtightness sealant offers installation technicians an alternative that they can use to seal complicated construction details just as quickly and easily as large surfaces. The AEROSANA VISCONN system is so versatile in practice that a majority of airtightness challenges that arise can be reliably solved using this product. The spray film is water-based and has achieved excellent values in hazardous substance testing.
Numerous possible interior and exterior applications
AEROSANA VISCONN is suitable for all surfaces typically found in construction, such as plastered or non-plastered masonry, porous panel-form materials or membranes. It can also be used as a bonding primer on rough or dusty subsurfaces and covers cracks and joints of up to 3 mm width. Joints of up to 20 mm width can be painted over using fibre-reinforced AEROSANA VISCONN FIBRE, an additional product in the system. To create airtight seals for bigger holes such as when sealing penetrations of pipes or ties, a piece of AEROSANA FLEECE can be used that is put in place before being painted or sprayed over. pro clima presents projects, products and a guiding principle
How does the selection of construction materials and the professional handling of these materials influence the construction of healthy buildings to live in? This is just one of the questions that MOLL pro clima is considering at BAU 2019. The overall issue of healthier buildings is the focus of the trade fair presence of pro clima, the specialist in windtightness and airtightness. At the heart of Stand 200 in Hall B6, we will be presenting our joint projects with the Sentinel Haus Institut – such as the current research project “My Future Office”, which deals with sustainable, healthier office buildings. However, a significant amount of space is also dedicated to both new and tried-and-tested products that pro clima has developed with the issue of healthy living environments very much in the foreground.
Finding out more, discussing technical issues, experiencing new products at BAU 2019: At the pro clima Stand 200 in Hall B6, everything will be focused on windtight and airtight building envelopes and their importance for achieving healthier buildings.
